The Only Mini Guide You Need for the Best Vegan Weekend in Frankfurt
One of my favorite ways to connect with local culture is through food. That gets a little trickier on a vegan diet — but Frankfurt has a plethora of options, and it turns out the city's most iconic dish is more vegan-friendly than I expected.
Vegan Frankfurter Schnitzel + Grüne Soße at Zum Eichkatzerl
The main event I was hunting for all weekend: Frankfurter Schnitzel + Grüne Soße, with an Apfelwein Bembel on the side. Grüne Soße is Frankfurt's classic green herb sauce — usually made with sour cream and seven fresh herbs — and Apfelwein is the city's cloudy, tart apple wine, served the traditional way in a stoneware Bembel jug. Together with schnitzel, it's the meal that defines eating in Frankfurt. I wasn't going to let being vegan take it off the table.
Here's every place I found doing a genuinely good vegan version of it — plus one honorable mention that has nothing to do with schnitzel and everything to do with being worth your appetite.
Where to Eat Vegan Frankfurter Schnitzel + Grüne Soße in Frankfurt
Apfelweinwirtschaft Atschel A Sachsenhausen apple wine tavern that's been around since the 1800s, doing a vegan schnitzel with vegan Grüne Soße and fried potatoes. Old-school tavern energy, modern menu accommodation.
Die Vegane Fleischerei Frankfurt Not a tavern — a fully vegan butcher shop in Bockenheim. If you want to build your own vegan Schnitzel + Grüne Soße situation, or just want to see how far Frankfurt's plant-based scene has come, this is worth the stop.
Apfelweinwirtschaft Dauth-Schneider Classic Sachsenhausen Apfelwein house with a vegan schnitzel on the menu alongside their Stöffche (apple wine, poured the local way). One of the more atmospheric spots on this list — go for the courtyard seating if it's nice out.
Apfelweinwirtschaft Frau Rauscher Right on Klappergasse in the heart of Sachsenhausen, and this one goes further than most: their vegan Grüne Soße is made with avocado, which gives it a creamier, richer texture than the traditional sour cream version. Ain interesting vegan reinterpretation.
Daheim im Lorsbacher Thal Cozy, wood-beamed, homestyle — and their vegan schnitzel with Grüne Soße and fried potatoes is a standout. This is the plate to order if you want the full traditional presentation without the traditional animal products.
Zum Eichkatzerl A Sachsenhausen institution dating back to 1880, with communal tables, murals on the walls, and a vegan Frankfurter Schnitzel plus vegan Grüne Soße on the menu. As traditional as it gets, plus the friendliest welcome by their staff that you could imagine.
Honorable Mention: Ong Tao Vegan
Not schnitzel, not Grüne Soße, not even German — and it doesn't matter. Ong Tao Vegan is simply beyond vegan Vietnamese food. We tried half the menu and everything was amazing. If you have room for a second Frankfurt meal that isn't apple wine and schnitzel, this is where it goes.
Practical Notes
All six schnitzel spots are clustered in or near Sachsenhausen — walkable from each other, so you can hop between a couple in one evening if you're doing a tavern crawl
Apfelwein is traditionally served in a Bembel (the grey-and-blue stoneware jug) and poured into ribbed glasses called Gerippte — order it "sauer" (still tart, the traditional way) or ask for it mixed with sparkling water if you want it lighter
Reservations are a good idea on weekends — these taverns are locally loved, not just tourist stops
Grüne Soße is genuinely a Frankfurt-only specialty tied to the region's herb-growing history — worth trying even outside the vegan schnitzel pairing
Get an eSIM sorted before you land with Airalo Germany so you can map-hop between taverns without hunting for wifi. And if you're building out your Frankfurt weekend, check Trip for where to stay in Sachsenhausen — it puts you within walking distance of every spot on this list.
